Class Highlights

1.) Abacus as the first computer.
This is my AHA! moment because as a Chinese I had learned how to use it when I was a little girl. Abacus is so close to my family roots and to learn that it was the first known computer invented, I was very proud of my ancestor!

2.) Titanic Disaster.
I had watched the movie Titanic when I was in middle school. It had left a sad impression of the catastrophic event due to arrogant and ignorance for safety. To learned that radio wasn't on 24 hours before this accident was quite a disappointment because we had to have a major disaster in order to realize the importance of something small. In this matter the 24 hour radio broadcast.

3.) Sam Sheppard's Trial
I cannot imagine myself being accused wrongly with so much publicity and so little defense against my testimonial. Having to serve jail for 12 years, having all the people to be against him and no justice is allowed for this poor soul, whom if not for the over publicity, would have a life that all Americans work for. In these modern times, no such unfair trial would ever happened again, because of Sam Sheppard case.

Media Ethics/ Media Law

http://www.rcfp.org/newsitems/index.php?i=11156

This is about a case whereby the husband of his late, overdosed wife, asked the court not to release her death records to the media or the public. He did this so as to protect his, and his late wife privacy from the public. However, the commissioner denied his request.

I am surprise to say that they only cover a total of 8 mins in news.

The lead news was chosen because it is an incident whereby it does not happened very often. It is a joyous time to have a new baby born into this world at the same time too. Coincidentally, there was a doctor to help out in the delivery.
The anchors were pretty good at having facial expression to match up with the tone of voice towards a particular breaking news.

Propaganda in Advertising/PR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIvmE4_KMNw

I watch Oprah most of the time. Recently, she had a talk show regarding girls and women in the developing world. The above link was aired on her show about how life is for girls at the developing world and how people in the developed countries can help them.

The two techniques that they use are 'Repetition' and 'Virtue Words.' They use the word 'Girls' repeatedly, thus having it stuck in one's mind that they are female children, which makes people have more empathy and sympathy to the women who are in these countries. They use positive words such as 'better world', 'Lower HIV', 'Peace', 'Education', 'Commerce' and etc. Therefore, making well-off people(mostly from the developed countries) want to make a donation, investment and support them financially.

Internet

There is a total of 12,599 search results for social networking websites. I have heard of Bebo, MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Hi5, Xanga, Twitter, OkCupid and many more. With a search result of 12 thousand over, I do not think that there are other social networking websites that are not listed there.

I have never heard of Essembly.com before until I came across its logo in the search. Essembly is a free, non-partisan social networking site that provides tools for politically interested individuals to connect with one another, engage in constructive discussion, and organize to take action.

I use social net-working to get to know a new friend better by viewing their profile information, know what is their life-style, read their responses and view their pictures. Also, keeping up and keeping in touch with old friends are important too. I uses Facebook and it helped me to stay up to date with my friends who are mostly half-way around the Globe. Before I join any networking websites, I had no clue what they were up to nowadays. They could have pass away for all I know.

I never had any trouble with social networking sites, instead it had helped me out a lot for keeping inform of my friends who are so far away or have not been catching up with them. What I really hope is that, the older generation could also signed up for these sites to be able to communicate with this younger generation. This hope is partly because of my total disconnection from my high school tutor whom I had no means of any form of address, contact number or her real full name. Thus, I had been unable to find her or keep in touch with her in any way. It had been 3 years since I last heard from her. How unfortunate to have lost a friend and incredible tutor.

Television

Length: 6:55mins
Description: This video is about the recent political campaign for presidential election and the impact of new technology that it had on the new generation on voting.
Chapter 10: The Internet.
Question: What are the mediums that President Barrack Obama used to gain popularity and votes from the younger generation?
Answer: For the baby boomers generation, the television was the new technology for communication. As for this new younger generation(or the millennium generation; the earliest generation to vote) , there is a new development of the web base social net-working communication.

Movies or Recordings

When I watch a movie, I tend to watch a lot of drama. I find that it is very educational; teaches one how to treat everyone good. My best watched movie of 2009 would be Seven Pounds. I watched it in the movie theater with my friends.
I like this movie because it has a story line that I had never seen or heard before. Will Smith is the main character for this movie. He had so much guilt(because of a car accident) in him that he wanted to sacrifice his own organs to people who needs them because of medical issue. It was a sad movie. However, I definitely had the great experience watching this in the movie theater as it made me feel as though I am in the story and totally forget about my own reality. It also made me think a lot about life after walking out of the cinema.

Books

Tuesdays with Morrie:
I can relate a lot with this book because I have a professor who is my mentor. The relationship I have is almost the same as Mitch Albom with Morrie Schwartz. Morrie teaches Mitch life greatest lessons, while mine teaches me to see the world of possibilities with the help of an education. My professor made me realized my goals in life through frequent visit to his office. He had recently passed away of a sudden heart attack.

A Child called 'It':
This book and its sequence open up a whole new world to me. A world of abusive parents. Even though the phrase: Blood is thicker than water applies to this book, your own kin could actually eat up your whole childhood. However, the author would not let this curse be continuous down the generation. He would not go down the path whom his mother was and he broke the chain of abuse.

The E Myth Revisited:
This book is about business in the real world. How small business work out and how it does not. This book helped me get a better picture in my prospective business career. Which is to own my own business. That we should learn from businesses that fails and learn from those that are successful.

Media Impact

I propose a media research project on the relations between TV drama series and the sexual life of the society. I will do content analysis of recent decade(the 21st century) TV drama series, on how it has impacted the sexual implications to individuals. I will be focusing more on how the people in the early 1900s who mainly seek monogamous sexual relationship to the openness of many sexual partners in modern times. I will be exploring how the sexual revolution come about from the impact of the Media with the help of comments from a few opinion leaders.

Media Autobiography

If I have to arrange the eight media according to my first encounter from my life, I would arrange it this way: Recordings, Radio, Television, Newspapers, Books, Magazines, Movies and Internet.

I was introduced to music from Recordings when I was a little girl. I remember playing children cassettes, rewinding it and fast-forwarding it to replay the song that I like best. Those were the times when CDs was not invented yet. Cassettes tapes are more inconvenient than CDs when we want to replay the same song over again. It takes time for me to rewind or fast-forward to the particular track that we want to hear. Whereas CDs, with a click of a button, it will be at the beginning of the track that we desire to listen. Radio and television are my everyday entertainment when I was a little girl apart from the recordings.

I was born in Indonesia and had my early education in Singapore. Therefore, English is not my primary language. My parents never read bedtime stories to me before I start school. I never learn to read until I was in school. How I get into Newspapers and Books were by force. My elementary school teacher wants us to read, write and learn better English by having us read the newspapers everyday as part of our homework. She had us read a story book every week and make comments about the book that we read. I remember the books were by Ladybird, short stories for children. I enjoyed our reading sessions but not our text books. I came to finish reading a novel only when I was in high school, which I find that to be pretty late, as all of my friends had read many novels at that time. Sometimes, I would think that perhaps, English was difficult for me to understand which prevented me from wanting to finish a story book.

Magazines and movies were only allowed by my parents when I was in high school. They were afraid that it would have a bad influence on my behavior as an adolescent. Not to mentioned internet. They were afraid that internet would corrupt my mind. It is a privilege for me to be able to surf the internet, even for my school work back in those days; when they were first introduced to the public and it was still expensive to even own a computer.
